St Julien

St Julien is situated between Pauillac and Margaux - not only geographically but stylistically as well. Less robust and long lived than Pauillac and not quite as perfumed and charming as Margaux. With this said it is a broad generalisation and does not mean that the wines are of lesser quality. Not very surprisingly the best vineyards are in the beneficial proximity of the Gironde, sites more inland to the west harvest considerably later due to the cooler mesoclimate. St Julien boasts an unusually high number of classified growths on it's approximately 900 ha of land. Less than 1/5th of the vineyard area belongs to the cru bourgeois estates. In other words, the majority of the terroir is of excellent quality. It features two extensive plateaus that have a mixed soil but predominantly gravel with some clay and sand. It's second growths include Leoville Poyferre, Leoville las Cases, Leoville Barton, Gruaud Larose, Ducru Beaucaillou. For a complete list of it's classified growths please see the 1855 page.
