Moulis

Moulis is a twin appellation with Listrac. Because of it's more westerly location from the Gironde it is considerably cooler than the communes located closer to the water. As a result, the fruit ripens here later and this explains the predominance of Merlot. Together with Listrac, these wines are good value only in good years, but because of their less favoured terroir they fail to perform well in difficult, cold years. The best soil type here is gravel on a clay-limestone bed, (Gran-Poujeaux is a plateau that features this soil) in lesser sites it is clay-limestone. It boasts some 650 ha of vineyards, and around a dozen of cru bourgeois with no cooperatives in the region. AC status has been granted in 1938.
