Listrac

A twin appellation with Moulis to it's immediate south. AC status was granted in 1957. Approximately 670 ha of vineyards. Listrac is the highest point in the Medoc with it's 43 meters above sea level. Roughly fifty percent of the soils is gravel with good drainage, though not that deep as in the other communes to the east. Approximately half of the vineyards are planted on clay-limestone and also on sandy soils which are less suitable for vines. Similarly to Moulis, it is difficult to ripen late varieties like Petit Verdot and Cabernet here due to the considerably cool climate and the wines really shine in good vintages, while in cold years they tend to be very rustic and coarse. It has a cooperative which processes about 50% of the fruit produced by some 90 growers.
