Fronsac
Around 830 ha a red grape vineyards can be found in Fronsac and it's heartland appellation: Canon Fronsac. Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Malbec dominate the vineyards with some Cabernet Sauvignon which however manages to ripen only in very good years. Fronsac and Canon Fronsac to the south have relatively cool limestone and sandstone soils, and the vineyards are situated on higher grounds, compared to the countryside to the north (which is why those lands with inferior terroir are only entitled to the basic Bordeaux appellation). Once this has been a very famous area, more famous than Pomerol and viticulture dates back to 1730. Fronsac and Canon Fronsac perform well in hotter years, their wines can be a good value for money even though it is closer in style to Medoc reds than to it's illustrious neighbor: Pomerol.
